Repairing hot water heaters is a complicated and potentially dangerous affair, as  you are working directly with scalding water, gas or electricity.  You should never attempt to service a water heater yourself. You can, however, troubleshoot the problem and identify the issue if your water heater exhibits one of the following behaviors:

– Hot water runs out quickly or heating is slow.  If you aren’t getting enough water it could just be that you need a bigger water heater. But if your heater is appropriately sized and you still aren’t getting enough, it could mean that the dip tube has come loose, that the burner is dirty or that the limit switch has been flipped incorrectly.

– Leaks can occur for a number of different reasons, including bad gaskets and valves and high pressure inside the tank. If you spot puddles of water near you water heater, or leaking from the top, side or around the base of the tank, call us immediately.

– A common problem with hot water heaters are rumbling or rattling noises. This is caused frequently by sediment or minerals deposited on the bottom of the tank from hard water. These deposits will create a barrier that causes air bubbles to form under the layer and make noises.

If you have an electric water heater, you may hear a hissing noise at start up. This is frequently also the result of sediment or mineral build-up on the bottom of the tank. Over time, these sediments build up a white-like mineral deposit (known as scale) which settles along the sides and bottom of the tank, seriously affecting your water heater’s performance.

If you hear your hot water heater creaking like the inside of a World War II submarine, then it likely means there is too much pressure inside the tank. The cause of this problem is usually a faulty pressure relief valve that may require repair or replacement. Unchecked, this can lead to leaks in the tank which is an expensive issue to resolve.
